Hill Brothers Construction using a TCC-450 to work outside the box

Lexington, KY (July, 2011)—This $58.8 million Dwyer Road Intake Canal in New Orleans East marks the final phase of the Dwyer Pump Station System construction. A new box culvert will run for 6,800 feet. These improvements provide flood protection for a ten-year rainfall event and will reduce damages from larger events. Completion is expected in August, 2012.
Hill Brothers Construction is using two Link-Belt 45-ton TCC-450 telescopic crawlers to build the cut and cover box culvert. Design plans call for the box to be reinforced concrete poured in 30-foot segments. The job site has made it difficult for RT cranes to maneuver—especially in the rain--because the earth has degraded from years of flooding, draining and constant water saturation.

"I'm extremely impressed with the telecrawlers and I don't think that I could ever go back to an RT," said John Hendrix, Hill Brothers project manager. "They have been the biggest benefit to us with their versatility and they have proved ideal for this project. Instead of fooling with outriggers, it handles the mud as is. We don't have to handle pads to build a work platform and level the machine. We can track to an area and get to work. The TCC's have their tracks extended to only 11 feet making it easy for them to maneuver along the trench.
"They are just so versatile for us," Hendrix continued, "like today when we are working at two different sections. One machine can actually support both operations. It can fly forms at one, track down to the other crew and pour concrete for several hours, then track back to the original site and fly rebar. And once he moves in, he just goes to work."
Hill Brothers Construction Company, founded 33 years ago by two brothers and two partners, started working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Louisiana with this contract. Since then, they have been awarded several other projects in the area. They also do heavy highway construction and are building Best Value stores across the mid-south.
