Niwa Crane: Lifting the big things, taking care of the little things

Niwa's 8690 places a 10,000-pound fuel tankLexington, KY (August, 2010) In 1988, Niwa Crane Ltd., Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, got the call from Co-op Ltd. to install several 50,000-liter fuel tanks for a new convenience store. Twenty-two years later, Niwa is still installing fuel tanks for the same company—only this time they are 75,000-liter, double-wall fiberglass tanks.

The old gas station was raised to make room for a new 2,000 square-foot, eight-pump gas station and convenience store with canopy. The HTC-8690 placed the tank into an excavated site measuring 38 feet long at the bottom, 13 feet, six inches wide and 15 feet, six inches deep.

The tank was 10 feet, six inches in diameter and 36 feet long and weighed about 10,000 pounds with rigging. The 8690 placed the tank at a 50-foot radius, with 85 feet of boom at a 53-degree boom angle.

“Probably 50 percent of our customers have been using us for 30 years, so we must be doing something right,” said Greg Niwa, president of Niwa Crane. “Taking care of your customer is the first priority. Customer satisfaction is the key to our financial  success. It’s the little things you do for them that make more of a difference than maybe the lowest price. Little things aren’t just anything—they are everything! I learned that fact early in my business career and it has become my motto.” The Niwa crew makes plans to take care of the little things.
